IVECO and Shell join forces for the transition to zero-emission transport
IVECO and Shell organized a joint event entitled “Transition to a net zero emissions – The road to a sustainable heavy vehicle transport system”, in order to draw attention, in a panel of inter-industry discussions, to the need decarbonization of the transport industry.
During the event, the two companies also launched a call for action for the transition from conventional fuels to alternative fuels and discussed priorities for the coming years in the transition to new energy sources.
In addition, the need to adopt less polluting energy sources on a larger scale and the role that liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biogas (bioLNG) must play in this process, along with developments in vehicle efficiency, were emphasized. and electric and hydrogen-based propulsion technologies.
The event was attended by representatives of the International Road Transport Union (IRU), renowned business consultants, such as representatives of Deloitte, but also Luca Sra, COO IVECO Truck Business Unit, Patrick Carré, Vice President of Global Commercial Transport Road, Shell, and other important players in the business environment.
The two companies undertook to decarbonise transport, but pointed out that a cleaner future requires the cooperation of various stakeholders – from the energy industry and vehicle manufacturers, to customers and authorities.
According to Giandomenico Fioretti, IVECO Alternative Propulsion Business Director, in recent years the demand for LNG-powered trucks has grown steadily, with vehicles evolving from a niche product in 2015 to almost 4% of today’s total industry volume. Biomethane-based fuel accounts for 17% of gas-fired fuel used in transport at EU level, and IVECO representatives expect it to be widely available in the coming years.
At the same time, in order to respond to this growing trend, the participants in the event agreed that an expansion of the infrastructure is needed to further stimulate the production of bioLNG, as a key factor in achieving the goal of zero net CO2 emissions. During the event, issues related to regulations in the field, the efficiency of gas-fired trucks and the needs for technological development were also discussed.
The panel concluded with considerations on the importance of working together between different companies in the ecosystem to allow decarbonisation of transport, and with a call to action for all stakeholders to join forces to support the transition to LNG and bioLNG, on the road to sustainability.
