Microsoft Edge is the world’s largest browser … after Chrome
Microsoft seems to have had a pretty good idea when it moved its proprietary browser, Edge, to the Chromium platform.
Not only is it far better optimized than Google’s classic Chrome, it offers the same functionality, plus a few extra capabilities, due to its integration with its services and applications.
This has given it a rapid growth, which is now the second browser in the world on desktop platforms, when it comes to the number of users.
According to NetMarketShare (via Bleeping Computer), an entity that deals with Internet traffic monitoring and reporting periodically based on the information gathered, Microsoft Edge is now the second browser in the world after Google Chrome.
Mozilla Firefox, a browser preferred by many Internet users, despite being on the market for many years, has been quickly outdated. Opera, Safari and even the old Internet Explorer have the same fate.
It is obvious that Google has a dominant position when it comes to browsing applications. Other online giants such as Apple or Yandex are far behind, and Microsoft has reached second place with a very small percentage.
These statistics are based on data from March 2020, so the situation may change in the near future.
If Microsoft continues to deliver enhanced performance and maintain compatibility with Google Chrome extensions. We may also see a drop in Google browser users.
At the moment, Edge’s growth seems to be due to the decline in popularity of other browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox.
In addition, this performance was achieved among users who manually installed Microsoft Edge, which is not yet integrated into the operating system.
Edge in the old version, on proprietary technology is still the default browser in Windows 10, but soon the new Edge will be offered to everyone by an update.
That will probably be the time when the new browser will rise above the “psychological” threshold of 10%, starting to become a true opponent for Chrome.
